Online Bible Study - Foundations of Faith

Introduction

Reading the Bible beginning at Genesis 1:1 reveals God's wonderful and orderly creation of the world and human beings. In Genesis 2:16-17, God issued one command, just one command, to the first man, who was named Adam. "The LORD God commanded the man, 'You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.'" This is a statement of law!

In the very next chapter of Genesis we read about how Adam and Eve, the first woman, dealt with God's first law. Adam and Eve, our ancestors, were tempted by Satan to disobey God's simple command. (Satan is the name for the devil, a spiritual being who is against God.) This Satan, the devil, took the form of a snake, and with tricky language and logic, tempted Eve to sin. Adam could not resist the encouragement of Eve to follow her temptation to disobey God. In doing so, Adam also sinned.

When God confronted the two of them for their failure to keep His one and only law, God also issued a promise. That's the way God does things. He gives good promises even when we have disobeyed Him. So in Genesis 3:15, God said to Satan and to us, "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." This was the promise of a Savior, someone God would send to save us all from the consequences of our sins, to rescue us from the results of our disobedience.
