Bible Study - Foundations of Faith
Law and Gospel
In the words "God commanded" (Gen. 2:16), we have the first expression of God's Law. In the words "I will put enmity between you and the woman" (Gen. 3:15), we find God's good news of salvation, the promise of the Gospel!
It is important for everyone to know that the Law and Gospel are the two great teachings of the Bible. When we know the difference between the Law and Gospel, and the blessings of each, we start to experience good things in our lives.
Following is a simple explanation of the difference between these two important teachings.
The Law:
- Has been written by God into the hearts of all people. It is called the conscience.
-
Is made known in all the places in the Bible where God
- shows us our sins;
- tells us what we are supposed to do and what we must not do;
- explains to us how we are to be and live.
The Gospel:
-
Is made clear to us in all the places in the Bible where God
- tells us what He has done and still does for us and for our salvation;
- shows us our Savior, Jesus Christ, and through Him, the grace, love and forgiveness of God.
Let us look in depth at each one of these items of difference.
The Law was written by God into the hearts of people. This is called the conscience.
When you do something wrong, do you feel bad? Do you get a funny feeling inside yourself, in your head or chest perhaps, that something is not right? Maybe you sense some kind of pressure from the outside? Do you wish you could hide, or try to hide your eyes from the eyes of those who love and know you? If you feel as described above, that's good. This is your conscience speaking to you. Conscience is that tiny voice inside us that makes us feel bad when we do something wrong. If you don't try to kill your conscience, it can be one of your best friends in life.
