Online Bible Study - Foundations of Faith

Law and Gospel

God most clearly shows us our sin through His Ten Commandments. Read Exodus 20:3-17.

FIRST TABLE OF GOD'S LAW

  1. You shall have no other Gods before me.
  2. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
  3. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
SECOND TABLE OF GOD'S LAW
  1. Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long.
  2. You shall not murder.
  3. You shall not commit adultery.
  4. You shall not steal.
  5. You shall not give false witness against your neighbor.
  6. You shall not covet your neighbor's house.
  7. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

These commandments are a clear and precise expression of God's Law. They tell us exactly what God wants us to do, and also what we must not do. If you do not know these Commandments of God very well, it would be good to memorize them at this time.

With this Law written down in God's Word, the Bible, and engraved in the hearts of all mankind, God's will is clear. He says clearly to us, "Do not sin!" Jesus, God's only Son, our Savior, also made that clear when he said to the lame man at the pool of Bethesda, "Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you" (John 5:14). And again Jesus said to the woman taken in adultery, "Go now and leave your life of sin" (John 8:11b). Even today, a person who sins has no excuses left. They cannot say, "I didn't know it was wrong." God's law is in their heart, even though they may try to deny it.
