Bible Study - Foundations of Faith
Law and Gospel
From what we have learned in this Bible study so far, there is a big difference between the Law and the Gospel.
LAW:
- It is Law when the Bible shows us what we must do and not do.
- It is Law when we learn in the Bible how to recognize sin in our lives and how much God hates sin.
- It is Law when the Bible tells us that all people need to hear the Law, especially those who are not sorry for their sins.
GOSPEL:
- It is the Gospel when we learn what God, in Christ, did, and still does, for our salvation.
- It is the Gospel when we learn about Jesus our Savior, and the loving grace of God shown through Him.
- It is the Gospel that must be preached to all people, especially sinners who have the heavy weight of sin in their minds and hearts.
To help us better understand Law and Gospel, a little talk about sin and grace is important.
First, sin. To explain sin, let's go back to the start of the Bible, Genesis 1:1. It says, "In the beginning God." "God?" Someone may ask you, "Who is God?" The Bible does not explain where God came from, it just states that in the beginning God already existed. It does not say that "gods" existed, but it points to the existence of one God.
People all over the world believe in some kind of a supreme being. The Holy Bible tells us that the only true supreme being is the God who created the world and sent a Savior to rescue us.
