Bible Study - Foundations of Faith
Baptism
Faith requires baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We learn this from Matthew 28:19, which says: "Go therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost." We learn it, too, from the baptism of Jesus, Matthew 3:16, where God spoke from heaven. "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
This kind of faith also trusts that only Jesus Christ has forgiven my sins and yours, and the sins of the whole world, by His suffering, death and resurrection. As St. Paul says, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved" (Acts 16:31). Again we read in I Corinthians 15:3, "Christ died for our sins," and in Acts 4:12, "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."
We have just learned from the Bible that all people who believe in Jesus Christ, God's Son, as their only Savior and Redeemer, will be saved. However, God clearly states in Mark 16:16 that "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved." So, "believing" is one gift from God, and the sacrament of Holy Baptism is another gift that God has given to His Church. Baptism is what God demands from all people who are called to Him by faith. If a person believes, he/she will have a desire to receive the sacrament of Holy Baptism and become a part of God's wonderful family.
