The Confession of Sins
Let us study Confession in five (5) steps.
- We must come to the true realization that we are continually sinning in thought, word, and deed. We are sinners.
- We must feel true sorrow that we have broken, and are still breaking, God's Law.
- We must confess to God all the sins that we have committed, even our sins of omission, as well as those sins that we do not know.
- We then must receive absolution or forgiveness from God Himself. (This usually takes the form of spoken words, announcing forgiveness. These words of absolution may come from the person against whom we have sinned, or a pastor or priest.)
- We must, by the Holy Spirit's help and power, take steps to stop committing that sin, and live a new and holier Christian life.
More about Confession
With those five steps in mind, let us first hear what God's Word says about confessing sins. We must understand that it is only God, for Jesus' sake, who forgives sins. In the Lord's Prayer we confess, "Our Father …Forgive us our sins..." (Luke 11:2-4). Psalm 130:4 says, "But with you (O Lord) there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared." Matthew 6:15 states, "But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." From these and many other Bible verses, there is no doubt that God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, has the authority and power to forgive sins.
