Bible Study - Foundations of Faith
The Confession of Sins
Due to our sinful nature, even though we confess and are absolved, we cannot stop sinning through our own power. The Holy Spirit, in and through God's Word and sacraments (Baptism and the Lord's Supper) increases our faith, and that faith can generate the power to amend or change our lives of sin. Yet, each day we will sin and must come again to the presence of God in His justice and mercy, confessing and receiving assurance that those sins are forgiven.
Conclusion
Confession and absolution is a blessed process. We have God's assurance that if we confess with our hearts, the forgiveness that Christ earned for us on the cross will be reaffirmed to us. Nonetheless, God simply says to us in Leviticus 19:2b, "Be holy because I, the Lord your God am holy." God requires us, by the Spirit, to live holy lives. As we confess our sins and seek God's forgiveness, let us also strive to live according to God's will.
May God bless this study of His Word, the Bible. May the hearts of all that hear or read this lesson be enlightened about the wonderful gift of confession and absolution, for cleansing the heart, as a step toward repentance and the forgiveness of sins.
