The Lord's Supper
The Lord's Supper, or Holy Communion as it is also called, is a very important part of Christian life and worship. To some believers the sermon is the high point of worship because it deals with the explanation of God's Word. To others the high point is the celebration of Holy Communion because that is partaking of the body and blood of our Lord. Who is correct?
It is absolutely certain that this is not an important question. We are fed by God's Word through our study, meditation, and hearing of the words of God in the Bible. In just the same way, we are spiritually fed when we receive this Holy Sacrament of the Lord's Supper in the same manner in which Jesus instituted it, namely to eat and to drink this precious meal for the forgiveness of sins. The Word and the sacraments (Baptism and the Lord's Supper) are the means of grace. It is most important that we study this Bible teaching lesson with hearts filled with the Spirit's wisdom and faith.
The Word of the Lord about His Last Supper
"After taking the cup, He (Jesus) gave thanks and said, 'Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.' And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.' In the same way, after the supper, He took the cup, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you'" (Luke 22:17-20).
