The Lord's Supper
This account, recorded in three of the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), makes it very clear that celebrating the "Lord's Supper" is a joyful, faith-strengthening, sin-forgiving requirement for all believers in Jesus Christ. This sacrament is a special spiritual gift from Christ to all believers, in which, through His body and blood, Christians receive the assurance of the forgiveness of sins and strength to lead holy lives.
What is a Sacrament?
This is a good place to study a definition of what the word sacrament means. It is very simple. A sacrament is:
- a sacred or holy act,
- ordained or "put into place" by God Himself,
- that which has visible elements present in this holy act,
- that in which God offers, gives, and seals (assured) to us, the blessing of the forgiveness of sins, which Christ Jesus earned for us through His death and Resurrection.
(In the Eastern Orthodox Church, the word "sacrament" is translated as "mystery." Yes, it is a mystery that by the power of God's Word through earthly means, believers are given and assured the forgiveness of sins.)
This special spiritual meal that God the Son, Jesus Christ, offers to believers is known by many names. Some of the most popular are:
| The Lord's Supper |
The Holy Eucharist (Thanksgiving) |
| The Holy Communion |
The Sacrament of the Altar |
