Bible Study - Foundations of Faith
The Lord's Supper
Again in 1 Corinthians 11:27 Paul says, "Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord."
It is easiest to explain this wonderful mystery in this way. In, with, and under the real bread and wine that we eat and drink, we receive Christ's true body and blood. We do not, and cannot, understand this with our human mind or logical thinking. It can only be accepted by knowing that this is what God has specifically said to us in His word, and what God has said is true. It is a matter of faith.
This sacrament or mystery, through faith and by eating and drinking the body and blood of Jesus (in, with, and under the bread and the wine), is a great, wonderful, and joyful spiritual benefit. Jesus in Luke 22:19-20 tells us that His body was "given for you.for the remission of sins." Jesus gave His body and poured out His blood on the cross, and in that sacrifice He forgave your sins and my sins and the sins of all mankind. So in this holy supper, Jesus, the Son of God, truly gives the forgiveness of sins. The Bible tells us more about this in Matthew 26:26 where Jesus said, "Take, eat: this is my body," and again in Matthew: 26:27-28, "And He took the cup, and gave thanks and gave it to them, saying, 'Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.'"
