Bible Study - Foundations of Faith
The Lord's Supper
Here are several good Bible verses that show the characteristics of a person who can properly take part in Holy Communion.
- 2 Corinthians 13:5 "Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith, test yourselves."
- Luke 18:13 "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast, and said, 'God have mercy on me, a sinner.'"
- Psalm 51:17 "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise."
- Mark 1:15 "Repent and believe the Good News!"
- 1 Corinthians 11:26ff "For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of that bread and drink of that cup."
- John 5:14 "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you."
Since the Lord's Supper is celebrated in a public assembly (church) may anyone partake of this Holy meal?
First, we can say that a person who does not have faith, one who does not believe in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord, should not partake of Holy Communion because they do not recognize the presence of our Lord's true body and blood in this Holy Supper. 1 Corinthians 11:29, "For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgement on himself."
