Online Bible Study - Foundations of Faith

The Lord's Supper

Who then really receives the greatest benefit from this Sacrament?
It is not how rich or how beautiful a person may be that moves God to give the benefits of Holy Communion. It is not whether you fast or subject yourself to punishment that makes a person worthy. It is not dependent on your perfection or holy life. It is those who, in sincere faith, confess, repent, and believe, that receive the full blessing in this Lord's Supper. Those filled with faith, contrition, and repentance received the following benefits of this sacrament:

  1. The perfect suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, as the ultimate sacrifice for my sins, your sins and the sins of the whole world.
  2. Faith generated by God the Holy Spirit, in the heart of a believer.
  3. Belief in the words "for you" and "for the forgiveness of sins."
  4. A full recognition that in, with, and under the bread and wine that we eat and drink, we are receiving the body and blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Conclusion
The next time you have the opportunity to partake of Holy Communion, approach the Lord's Table with a clean heart. Having confessed your sins and having received absolution, this special meal that God has prepared for you will be a wonderful blessing. Your faith will be increased. You will have a greater assurance of the forgiveness of sins and the hope of heaven. You will have strength to live a holier life.
