Bible Study - Foundations of Faith
The Last Things
Introduction
Jesus Christ, God's Son, the spotless Lamb of God, came into this world to save sinful mankind. He had to be born, live sinlessly in this world of temptation and sin, suffer and die. In these unselfish acts, Jesus paid the penalty of sin and guilt for all mankind. However, if Jesus had only died it would not have been enough. Jesus also had to conquer death, the "last thing." Jesus' victory over death was demonstrated when He rose from the grave on the third day. His resurrection makes our resurrection a reality. "Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live" (John 14:19).
When Jesus ascended up into heaven, he also left the promise that He would return. Two angels came and spoke to the disciples saying, "This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven" (Acts 1:11b). Jesus told Mary outside the tomb shortly after his resurrection, "I am returning to my father and your father, to my God and your God" (John 20:17b).
With this kind of Biblical knowledge and Holy-Spirit-given faith, we can look forward to our time of death without fear. We can look forward with hope to our personal ascension into heaven where we will be with our Lord Jesus Christ in person. Finally, we can look forward to this simple study of "the last things."
