Bible Study - Foundations of Faith
The Last Things
All a Matter of Faith
God, through St. Peter, gives us the formula for handling information about the last things, including the Millennium and Rapture. He lets us know that these matters are not clear, nor are they essential for our salvation. We are strengthened in our understanding of, and faith in, the "last things" by the words of 2 Peter 3:3-6, "First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, "Where is this 'coming' he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation." So it is no surprise that there are many different ideas and explanations about last things, such as rapture and the millennium.
What is going to happen? The end will surely come. By faith in the clear words of God as found in the Bible, and by faith in the redemptive work of Christ, we are prepared for whatever God has in store for us in those last times. Again, listen to Peter, "But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation" (2 Peter 3:13-15).
Conclusion
As you continue to read and study about the interesting "Last Things" that God has in store for us, you no doubt will study the book of Revelation. When you do, remember that is a vision given to St. John the Divine by the inspiration of God. That book is not a chronology of events leading up to the last day. It is not a clear exposition of everything that will happen as the end of the world approaches. It is, however, a wonderful book that God has prepared to inspire all of us to do mission and ministry as the end times approach. In this way we can boldly say; "He who testifies these things says, 'Yes, I am coming soon.' Amen. Come Lord Jesus" (Revelation 22:20).
The End of the Series
With these six teachings of the Bible, may you grow in faith, continue to produce the fruits of faith, and look forward to your day of death with the hope and joy of everlasting life. Finally, may you accept the return of Jesus Christ to judge the living and the dead as a wonderful and joyous victory celebration, for yourself and all believers in Christ. God bless your continued study of the Bible, God's inspired Word of truth.
