The Last Things
The Last Day - Christ's Second Coming
One day after Jesus had completed His work while He was with us on earth, He and his disciples went to a mountain near Bethany. From there He gloriously ascended into heaven. It was made clear to the disciples that He would return to judge the world, "This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven" (Acts 1:11b).
Throughout Jesus' earthly ministry, He told His followers that the "last day" was near. Jesus said in Matthew 4:17, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." Again, in Matthew 10:7, "As you go, preach this message: 'The kingdom of heaven is near.'" Also, in Luke 21:31 Jesus stated, "Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near."
St. Peter echoes Jesus' words so clearly in 1 Peter 4:7, "The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear-minded and self-controlled so that you can pray." We also read in Acts 17:31 "For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed."
Not only did Jesus and his Apostles forewarn mankind of the coming of the "last day," but they also made known the signs of its coming. Acts 2:18b-21 states, "I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
