The Last Things
By inspiration, Peter gives a more graphic picture of that wonderful "last thing." "By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming" (2 Peter 3:7-12).
These few inspired verses of God's word, written by St. Matthew, St. Luke and St. Peter, tell us so much about the end of all things. There are only a few surprises left for the Bible-believing Christians.
The Resurrection of the Body
The Bible teaches that when the "last day" comes, the body that we now live in will be made whole again, resurrected, to experience the judgement of God. Job, a man of faith and a faithful man of God, explains the resurrection clearly, "I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes, I - and not another" (Job 19:25-27).
On that "last day," God, in His creative power, will give or return to all mankind their present body, perfect and incorruptible. "The Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body" (Philippians 3:21b).
