Online Bible Study - Our New Life in Christ

Who's in Charge Here?

SECTION ONE: Who's In Charge Here?
The Christian's Relationship with God.

Why should we, as Christians, try to do what God wants us to do? Why not just take the forgiveness He gives us and go on living life the way WE want to live? Since God is so quick to forgive us, we can do whatever we want. We can even lie, steal, cheat or hate other people.

The answers to those questions are found when we take a look at the relationship we have with our God. Remember what we say when we pray The Lord's Prayer? The very first words of that prayer are, "Our Father"! That means we have a special relationship with our God. He's not just some spirit that we cannot see, cannot hear, cannot find when we need Him. He has chosen to make us His children and give us all of His love! How did that happen?

1. THE OLD COVENANT
Right from the beginning, at the time of Creation, Man was given a very special place among all of God's handiwork. Read Genesis 1:16-31.

1. How did He feel about each of the things that He created? (verse 31)

2. In verses 26-31, what two things were special about man…how was he different from all the other creatures that God made?
a. (verse26)
b. (verse28)

God created man and woman, placed them in a beautiful garden, gave them control over everything around them. In return, He asked only one thing. Read Genesis 2:16-18.

What was God's only rule?

But God's enemy, the Devil, had other ideas! He wanted very much to destroy the special relationship between God and human beings. Read Genesis 3:1-13 to see how he carried out his evil plan.

Why do you think Eve disobeyed God? (verse 6)

As we learn from reading the Old Testament, God did not give up on His special relationship with human beings! He wanted to make a covenant, an agreement, with them. God's covenant said, "I am your God, and you are my people. You obey me, follow what I command you to do, and I will take care of you all the days of your life." He repeated this agreement many times in the history of the people of Israel. He made this agreement with Abraham (Genesis 17:1-8), with Moses when he went up on Mount Sinai to get The Ten Commandments (Exodus 19:3-8) and with many other people.
