Who's in Charge Here?
But as we also learn from reading the Old Testament, the result of the covenant between God and humankind was always the same. All the people who made the agreement with God were tempted by the same kind of pride that made Adam and Eve sin.they thought that they could live without God, that they could do whatever they wanted with their lives. Adam and Eve were thrown out of the Garden of Eden; and the people made a golden calf as an idol while Moses talked to God at Mount Sinai. Would our special relationship with God be a failure? Would we no longer be able to experience His love and concern? Read what St. Paul has to say in Romans 7:14-24. Why is Paul not able to do the good that he wants to do? (verse 20) How do you think sin lives inside of us? Is there any way we can escape from the power of the Devil by ourselves? Since it is impossible for us to obey all of God's commandments, to do the good that He wants us to do, will God then break off His loving relationship with all of us? This would be the case if we were only to live under the Old Covenant, the covenant of the Law. Read Romans 3:9-20. Is it the purpose of the Law to save us from our sins? (verse 20) What does St. Paul say is the purpose of the Law?
