"Having money is the most important thing in life. If you have money you can buy anything else you need." "No, being popular is the most important thing in life, having many friends and many people who want to be like you." "Well, I think power is most important, being able to have other people do what you want them to do." People who make statements like those are fighting against the Spirit of God. They want to forget about God's love, about God's great concern for them and to replace God with other things. Whenever we try to give God's place in our lives to another person, thing, or idea, we commit the sin called idolatry. Matthew 6:24-34 talks about this sin, and about how we can keep it from interfering in our relationship with God. Why does Matthew say it is impossible to serve two masters? In what way have you found that to be true in your own life? What is Matthew's advice to keep us from worrying about things? (verse 33) Many times, though, people come to us preaching a new kind of religion. They ask us to deny that Jesus is the Son of God, our Savior, and to give our faith to someone else. They say that Mohammed is a prophet greater than Jesus, or that the leader of their church has come to finish Jesus' work for Him. They sell trinkets or charms that are supposed to give us healing, or protection, or special powers of one kind or another. They offer "special" potions or magic formulas that can work miracles in our lives. These people, too, are asking us to fight against the Spirit of God! Read Galatians 1:6-12. What does the Bible say about those who preach a different gospel than Jesus Christ? What makes the Gospel of Jesus different from all human religions? What would be the results in peoples' lives if they were to be led astray by another gospel? That's why the Bible says over and over again, our faith in Jesus Christ is ALL we need to be saved, all we need to restore our special relationship with God!
