Online Bible Study - The Promise Is to You

THE QUESTION: How did sin enter the world?

WE BELIEVE: Sin came through Satan's temptation and man's disobedience.

The Bible tells us that when God originally made the world, everything was perfect. Even our original human ancestors, Adam and Eve, were sinless. They had the "image of God," which means they were righteous and good like God is. God designed humanity to be happy and to live forever in the wonderful world He had provided. They would never be sick or experience sadness. Their lives would know only joy and peace. God had only given one rule: Adam and Eve were not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Satan, a rebellious angel, persuaded Adam and Eve to break God's one law.

A STORY...
Satan came in the form of a snake and he talked to Eve, like this: "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree?'" She said, "We may eat from the trees, but not from the one in the middle. God said that if we touch it, we will die." (Notice she didn't quite remember God's word. God never said anything about touching the tree.) Satan answered, "You will not die. God knows when you eat from it your eyes will be opened and you will be like Him, knowing good and evil."

Then the woman looked at the tree and saw that the fruit looked good and that she could get wisdom from it. She and her husband both ate from it. Immediately, both of them felt guilty and tried to hide from God. (based on Genesis 2-3) Of course, they couldn't hide from God very long. When He met with the rebels, He said the following to the snake...

GOD SPEAKS...
"I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." Genesis 3:15

With these words, God says that Satan and his demons are the eternal enemies of humankind. But God also promises a Savior. One of the descendants of Eve, Jesus Christ, would destroy the work of Satan--sin and death--which he had brought into the world that day. Satan would strike back, and wound the heal of Jesus. On the cross, Jesus suffered terribly, with wounds in His palms, in His side and in His feet. This was the price He paid for His victory, but His victory is complete. He rose again from the grave. All who trust in Jesus have the forgiveness of their sins, death cannot harm them, and they will live with God in His new paradise.

IN THIS PART OF OUR LESSON THERE ARE TWO QUESTIONS:

1. Who worked together to bring sin and death into the world?

2. After Adam and Eve sinned, what was God's promise?
