Online Bible Study - The Promise Is to You

THE QUESTION: Can I believe in Jesus and another god?

WE BELIEVE: The only way to be saved is through Jesus alone.

A STORY: A hunter raised his rifle and took careful aim at the large animal. When he was about to pull the trigger, the animal spoke in a soft, soothing voice, "Isn't it better to talk than to shoot? What do you want? Let us negotiate." Lowering his rifle, the hunter replied, "I want your hide." "Good," said the animal, "That is negotiable. I want a full stomach, so let us compromise". They sat down to negotiate, and, after a time, the animal walked away alone. The negotiations had been successful. He had a full stomach and the hunter was wrapped in the animal's hide.

ANSWER THIS: This fable, funny or not, points out that there are some things in this world that can't compromise. List some things that shouldn't be put side by side (example: a lighted match and a tank of gas):

GOD SPEAKS: We live in a world where people like to be compromise. There are times when compromising is not possible. We don't want a doctor to give us medicine that is almost right. A student doesn't get a good grade on a mathematical test if he gives an answer that is almost correct. The answer is right or it is wrong...the doctor's prescription is either right or wrong. There is no compromise. When it comes to religion, that is also true. Either a religion saves us from sin or it doesn't. We know that of all the world's religions, Christianity is the only one where man doesn't have to save himself. Because of this, Christianity does not compromise with other religions. God, Himself, does not compromise. This is what the Lord has said about the plan of salvation He has given us:

  • There is no other God but one. (1 Corinthians 8: 4)
  • We should worship and serve the Lord alone. (Matthew 4: 10)
  • The Lord will not share His praise with man-made gods (Isaiah 42: 8)
  • We should trust God rather than believing our own wisdom. (Proverbs 3: 5)
  • Only believers in Jesus have a place in the kingdom of God. (Mark 10: 24)
  • We should love the Lord with all our heart, soul and mind (Matthew 22: 37)
  • Jesus is the only Person Who can save us. (Acts 4: 12)
  • An man-made god has no value, since it is his creation. (Habbakuk 2:18)

Because of all these reasons, the Lord says, you must turn from other gods. It is necessary, by the Holy Spirit's power, for believers in Jesus to fight a war against sin and the false beliefs they have held. Doing this can be costly. Neither the devil nor family and friends will be pleased if you turn your back on your old beliefs. If that happens, hear the words of Jesus, Who said "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.... What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? .... He (God) will reward each person according to what he has done. (excerpts: Matthew 16:24-27)

THIS PART OF OUR LESSON ASKS YOU TO: List some of the people who might be upset that you are a Christian:

What will you say to them when they challenge you:
